As written
communication lacks facial expressions, body language, inflection and tone of
voice, online communication becomes tricky at times.
It becomes more
crucial for those who are using online classrooms to adhere to same standards
of communication online that you follow in real time. We sometimes overlook
while communicating virtually the basic civility believing 'No one's Watching’,
But be known that you are being observed.
I want to quote 1984's
epic statement written by George Orwell, which is apt for the cyberspace,
“BIG BROTHER
IS WATCHING YOU.”
Remember
communication is never private online. Classroom communication is archived.
Anything on the server can be subpoenaed.
Know
where you are in the cyberspace. Be it a virtual classroom moderated by an
instructor or a social media chat room open to millions, YOU are being watched.
So
follow certain rules to avoid any conflict:
- Respect other people's time and
bandwidth.
- Make yourself look good online.
- Respect other's privacy.
- Do not gossip.
- Share knowledge
- Maintain civility
- Mind your language
- Do not yell (write in ALL CAPS!!)
- Help keep flame wars under control
- Follow institutional rules
- Must adhere to core rules of netiquettes.
